چکیده

ABSTRACT A dual layer patterned element magnetic recording medium design is presented that is expected to satisfy areal densities at 10Tbit/in. Each element consists of a small high anisotropy initial layer on top of which is deposited an exchange coupled soft layer of approximately equal thickness that extends in the recording direction almost to an adjacent element. This design has two distinct advantages. Reversal by precessional switching will occur for realistic record head field rise times (100-200 ps). Thermal stability for such small elements is maintained by hard section anisotropy fields that are an order of magnitude larger than the reversal field. Here reversal mechanisms and system design are discussed in detail.

Role of Bit Patterned Media in Future of Hard Disk Drives

The hard disk industry has traditionally stayed competitive by competing on the means of price alone by cutting down aggressively on cost via increase of areal density. Continuing increases in the areal density of hard disk drives will be limited by thermal instability of the thin film medium and is estimated to be limited to about 500Gb/in2 . Patterned media, in which data are stored in an arr...

Two-dimensional Decoding Algorithms and Recording Techniques for Bit Patterned Media Feasibility Demonstrations

Recording experiments and decoding algorithms are presented for evaluating the bit-error-rate of state-of-the-art magnetic bitpatterned media. The recording experiments are performed with a static tester and conventional hard-disk-drive heads. As the reader dimensions are larger than the bit dimensions in both the down-track and the cross-track directions, a two-dimensional bit decoding algorit...
